GUIDE 01
My child is failing or missing assignments
Español: Mi hijo tiene bajas calificaciones o tareas pendientes
What to do
- Open the school grade portal and separate missing work from low scores on completed work.
- Ask the teacher which two or three assignments or skills should come first. Ask whether late or revised work is accepted.
- Make a realistic weekly plan with short study sessions and a follow-up date.
Helpful context: Check the gradebook together, not as a punishment. Ask: Is the main issue understanding, organization, attendance, or submitting completed work?
Message you can send to school
Please help me identify the highest-priority missing work and the best way my child can improve. Could we make a plan and check progress next week?
GUIDE 02
I cannot help with English homework
What to do
- Ask your child to explain the directions in your home language.
- Check the example, rubric, or assignment instructions together. Use a trusted dictionary to clarify individual terms.
- Have your child explain a possible answer before writing. Contact the teacher if directions remain unclear.
Helpful context: Parents can support planning, questioning, and persistence without knowing every answer or speaking fluent English.
Message you can send to school
Could you share an example or explain the directions in simpler language? I want to support my child at home.
GUIDE 03
My child struggles with reading
Español: A mi hijo le cuesta leer
What to do
- Choose a text at an accessible level and discuss the title, images, and topic before reading.
- After a short section ask: What is the main idea? Which sentence supports it? What is still confusing?
- If difficulty persists, ask the teacher about reading assessments, intervention, and targeted skills.
Helpful context: Reading and discussing stories in the family’s strongest language is valuable. For older students, use science or social studies articles that match their interests.
Message you can send to school
Which reading skill is most difficult right now, and what is one strategy we can practice at home?
GUIDE 04
My child refuses to do homework
What to do
- Ask privately what makes starting difficult: confusion, fatigue, frustration, attention, or too much work.
- Set a predictable start time and a short first goal, such as ten focused minutes, with a brief break.
- Use a simple checklist and praise specific effort. Ask the teacher for adjustments if the pattern continues.
Helpful context: Avoid assuming refusal means laziness. Focus on removing barriers and tracking what changes.
Message you can send to school
My child is having trouble getting started on homework. Can we identify the main barrier and agree on a manageable first step?
GUIDE 05
I need to speak with school staff in my language
What to do
- Tell the school which language you prefer for written and spoken communication.
- Request a qualified interpreter for important conversations or meetings at no cost.
- Before the meeting write down your questions; afterward request the agreed next steps in writing.
Helpful context: U.S. public schools must communicate important school information effectively with parents who have limited English proficiency.
Message you can send to school
I would like to schedule a meeting and request an interpreter in my preferred language. Please tell me what times are available.
GUIDE 06
I do not understand ELPAC scores
Español: No entiendo los resultados del ELPAC
What to do
- Find the overall performance level on the official Student Score Report.
- Review the oral language and written language results and compare with prior results when available.
- Ask which classroom language supports and goals match the student’s specific needs.
Helpful context: The annual Summative ELPAC measures English language proficiency. It is not the same as a grade in English class or a general intelligence test.
Message you can send to school
Could you explain my child’s ELPAC results and which listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills we should work on next?
GUIDE 07
Will my child be reclassified?
Español: ¿Cuándo será reclasificado mi hijo?
What to do
- Find the most recent Summative ELPAC or Summative Alternate ELPAC overall performance level.
- For California’s rules effective September 27, 2026, level 4 on Summative ELPAC or level 3 on Summative Alternate ELPAC meets the statewide reclassification criterion.
- If the qualifying score is from 2025–26, contact the school about timing. State guidance requires eligible students to be reclassified no later than January 31, 2027.
Helpful context: The law changed in 2026. Prior four-criterion descriptions can be outdated; rely on updated California Department of Education guidance.
Message you can send to school
My child earned a qualifying score. Please confirm the reclassification timeline and the school’s next steps.
GUIDE 08
My child needs additional school support
Español: Mi hijo necesita apoyo adicional
What to do
- Describe the specific issue with examples and dates, such as reading difficulty, attendance concerns, bullying, or classroom access.
- Ask the teacher or principal what intervention is available, who will coordinate it, and when progress will be reviewed.
- If you suspect a disability, ask the school how to request an evaluation under applicable procedures; English learner status alone does not rule out evaluation.
Helpful context: Keep copies of messages and ask for written follow-up. Urgent safety concerns should be reported promptly to the school.
Message you can send to school
I am concerned about my child’s progress and would like to discuss available supports and a clear follow-up plan.

Soluciones paso a paso para familias
